PlayStation 4 is still the most sold console of this generation, but it must definitely look to the future. "But we can't ignore the Nintendo Switch, which has also captured consumers' attention", Sony Senior General Manager of Corporate Planning & Control Department Kazuhiko Takeda told Japan's Nikkei today. Thanks in no small part to all those PS4s the company has sold, its electronics business, which includes video games, is on its way to hitting a record operating profit, according to Takeda. The device is expected to outsell the lifetime sales of its predecessor, the Wii U in its first year.

This represents sales of around 4 years out from the system's November 15, 2013 launch, keeping the PS4 roughly in line with the sales of the PlayStation 2.

The PlayStation 4 has now sold an impressive 70m units worldwide. The nine-month timespan is actually quite precise since the latest Media Create release is related to the week ending on December 3rd, with a total bounty for Nintendo's new console of 2.522.298 units. Not only that, but it was back in June that Sony announced the console had passed 60 million consoles, meaning they've shifted a staggering 10 million in less than half a year!

Meanwhile, the PlayStation VR has now sold more than 2m units.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed new sales milestones for PS4 and PS VR, and things are looking pretty good for the PlayStation brand. Even if it eventually does, it's not inconceivable that Sony will have already turned its attention to the inevitable PlayStation 5 at that point.
