But with Smith - who was a quarterback on Riley's Oregon State team in 1998 - being a first time coach, part of his job description will undoubtedly be as a mentor and a common sense coach for Smith, who will be asked to make decisions that he has never made before now that he has the big office in the complex.

After two stints as the Oregon State head football coach, Mike Riley is officially returning to Corvallis.

Smith, a former Beavers' quarterback, was a graduate assistant at Oregon State under Riley in 2003.

Mike Riley is returning to Oregon State. Riley left Corvallis after a 12-year run following the 2014 season for Nebraska, where he went 19-19 over the past three seasons and was sacked November 25. "He understands what it takes to win in this conference, and how to evaluate and develop student-athletes".

Following a three-year hiatus, Mike Riley is back at Oregon State. Bray was Nebraska's linebackers coach and he served as the interim head coach for a week before the Huskers hired Scott Frost.

During his time at OSU, Riley coached current National Football League quarterbacks Derek Anderson (Carolina Panthers) and Matt Moore (Miami Dolphins), All-American wide receiver Brandin Cooks (New England Patriots) and former All-Pro running back Steven Jackson.

Riley was 19-19 at Nebraska and the Cornhuskers were 4-8 this season, the school's worst record since 1961.

Cookus, a former OSU safety who was Smith's teammate on the 2000 Fiesta Bowl team, spent the past two years as the Beavers' special teams quality control coach.

Under Cory Hall and Gary Andersen last season, the Beavers finished last in the Pac-12 standings and went 1-11, the program's fewest wins since 1995.
