'Mario + Rabbids' gets a free versus battle mode tomorrow

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a brand new adventure to life featuring Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Yoshi, and four Rabbids heroes: Rabbid Mario, Rabbid Luigi, Rabbid Peach, and Rabbid Yoshi. Sharp enough to test against another human player?

The new mode is a welcome addition to a fantastic game, and once again shows Ubisoft delicately balancing the mix of paid and free add-on content for their games.

It'll take some getting used to, however: the movement and attack system in the base game allows each character to utilize one movement, one attack, and one ability in each turn, but the PvP mode overhauls this in favor of a ticket-based structure.

There's a catch, however.

"'Versus' challenges players to handpick their three-hero squads and use every attack and technique available to them to claim victory across small, surprise-filled maps", Ubisoft's Mikel Reparaz said in an announcement on the UbiBlog. Will you move all your characters into strategic positions, or will you spend all your actions to, say, move Luigi into a sniping spot, activate his motion-attacking Steely Gaze, and then open fire on a juicy target?

Versus mode's selectable combatants are evenly matched, from a skill-point standpoint. Instead of the usual levelled-up campaign characters, both players will instead choose from upgraded versions of all eight heroes with a possibility to pick an all-Mushroom Kingdom or all-Rabbid Kingdom teams. And if you're in a hurry you can limit battles to as few as seven turns, with time limits for each turn.

Surprising and random bonus items are available on the battlefields, conferring additional actions, double damage or other advantages to the player who collects them.
