Earlier this week, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield was named one of three finalists for the Heisman Trophy.

Mayfield, reigning Heisman victor Lamar Jackson of Louisville and Stanford running back Bryce Love were chosen as finalists for the 83rd Heisman Trophy on Monday night.

For a school that lacked much college football history until the past decade, Stanford has turned into a Heisman-contender factory. Mayfield is considered the favorite.

Mayfield becomes just the fifth player to finish in the top four in voting for the Heisman Trophy three straight years. He upped his completion percentage from 56.2 percent last year to 60.4 percent this year, plus finished with 3,489 passing yards and 25 touchdowns (to six interceptions).

Crafted in the likeness of former New York University running back Ed Smith and created by Frank Eliscu, the cast bronze Heisman Trophy debuted in 1935 and was awarded to Chicago halfback Jay Berwanger, when it was referred to as the Downtown Athletic Club Trophy. He's a big part of the reason Mayfield was so upset Oklahoma wasn't a finalist for the Joe Moore Award, given to the nation's best O-line.

Mayfield is trying to become the sixth Heisman victor from Oklahoma and third Sooners quarterback (Jason White and Sam Bradford) to win since 2003. Last season, the Cardinals went 9-4 (7-1 in ACC play) while making it to the prestigious Citrus Bowl. Mayfield leads the nation in efficiency rating at 203.76 and has thrown for 4,340 yards and 41 touchdowns.

Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield placed third in Heisman voting past year behind victor Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Watson.

"I'm honored to be chosen as a finalist with these two outstanding players", Jackson said in a statement. "They each had great seasons and deserve this tremendous honor".

Griffin won back-to-back Heismans for Ohio State in 1974 and '75. He's averaging 8.3 yards per carry, has 17 touchdowns and set the FBS record with 12 runs of at least 50 yards this season. Jackson, the reigning Heisman Trophy victor, is back as a finalist after putting together another impressive campaign that includes 3,489 passing yards, 1,443 rushing yards, 25 touchdown passes and 17 rushing scores.

While running back Bryce Love is the latest Stanford player to receive a nomination, Shaw was an offensive coordinator when running back Toby Gerhart was nominated in 2009.

The Big 12 runner-up Horned Frogs meet Stanford in the Alamo Bowl on December 28.
