Right now, Marshall is hard at work on another Disney film - Mary Poppins Returns - and we can only expect that this means the studio has thus far been happy with the work Marshall gave them.

Deadline is reporting that Rob Marshall is Disney's top choice to direct their live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. That film, which also stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep, and Colin Firth is due in theaters next Christmas.

Following the success of live-action reboots of classics like Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book, Disney is embarking on another bankable revival - a live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.

The outlet reports that Disney has offered the project to Rob Marshall and that the filmmaker will wait until after the holidays to make a decision. Miranda is one of the stars of Mary Poppins Returns, and is now set to write new songs for The Little Mermaid, alongside the legend Alan Menken.

The Little Mermaid is just one of multiple live action adaptations of classic Disney films now in the works. If you've ever gotten one of the film's eminently hummable songs stuck in your head - tunes like "Part of Your World" or "Under the Sea" - it's Menken you have to thank. Marshall has also worked on Pirates of Carribean: On Stranger Tides, so the director has plenty of experience working with the company.

The next Disney animated classics that will receive the live-action treatment are The Lion King, directed by Jon Favreau, Aladdin, starring Will Smith as Genie and directed by Guy Ritchie, Dumbo from Tim Burton and Mulan from Niki Caro.

Marshall was nominated for an Academy Award for directing the 2002 musical Chicago.
