DeMarcus Cousins Goes for 40 and 22 in Pelicans Win

Without Davis, New Orleans defeated Portland on Saturday behind DeMarcus Cousins' 38 points.

By the end of the game New Orleans, behind Cousins' 40 points, seemed to be nearly unstoppable on offense. With nine minutes remaining, Cousins had helped draw five fouls each on Nuggets big men Kenneth Faried and Mason Plumlee, ensuring neither could slow him down on drives to the rim.

The Nuggets routinely doubled Cousins on the dribble but while it affected the Kentucky product in the first, Cousins dominated from there on out.

Denver's momentum was then zapped on a sequence where Emmanuel Mudiay stole the ball from Jrue Holiday to only turn it over a few seconds later. After a awful loss to the Dallas Mavericks the other night, they lost a somewhat close battle with the New Orleans Pelicans. However, unfortunately for the Nuggets, once the buzzer for quarter number three, the beast that is "Boogie" had finally awoken.

Gary Harris still had a decent game as he was the high point man for Denver tallying 24 points.

New Orleans surrendered a staggering 146 points to Denver in the first meeting between the squads on November 17, and while Cousins' offensive numbers were gaudy on Wednesday night, his play on defense was key in the second half. At the half, the game score was separated by one point (67-66) in favor of New Orleans.

The Nuggets would regroup and rediscover their energy in the second quarter. They hit seven threes on ten attempts in the first quarter - led by Will Barton who dropped three bombs from deep. This time, the Nuggets didn't fare as well.

Denver still has not won a first quarter on the road since October 27 in Atlanta. "If you go back and look, those guys played the last game and Jamal Murray is the guy that hurt us the most". They blitzed him repeatedly as Denver ended up scoring their first six points of the game by blowing by Rondo and that consistently resulted in easy layups. Jokic, who anchors that defense from the middle, is traveling with the team but is unlikely to return by Wednesday. "The fact that he's day-to-day, I think is great".

"He can still have a profound impact on all of our guys if he's wearing a suit or if he's just on the practice court encouraging guys". "But I've been getting better for the most part". "They get their 3s from dribble penetration", Nuggets coach Michael Malone told reporters of the Mavericks.
