Ben Stokes and Alex Hales have been named in England's one-day worldwide squad for the five-match series against Australia that follows the Ashes, with the head coach Trevor Bayliss mindful that Stokes's eventual return will bring "a circus".

"Selectors were given clear guidance to name their strongest squad and have made their selections accordingly", an European Central Bank spokesman said.

The pair were named in a 16-man squad, accompanied by a brief England and Wales Cricket Board statement.

The New Zealand-born all-rounder has been suspended from playing for England while police investigate his role in the September 25 incident in Bristol, which followed a limited-overs global against the West Indies.

Police completed their investigation last week and the case is with United Kingdom prosecutors, who are determining whether to charge Stokes. But with Stokes' situation still not determined, he may not feature in the five-match one-day series, let alone the current Ashes series.

"Alex Hales will now be considered for England selection following confirmation that he is no longer a suspect in relation to an incident in Bristol in September", the European Central Bank said in a statement on Monday night. "Still waiting for the police report", coach Trevor Bayliss said, highlighting the huge uncertainty over the star's availability.

The first one-day worldwide is in Melbourne on January 14. There's been a fair bit of scrutiny that's come along with it in the first five or six weeks as well.

"Whenever he comes back that's going to be a bit of a circus".

"We've got to take a decision but I think the best way is to go with the two guys who have taken over". Whether it's any more of a circus than we've already seen on this tour is hard to say.

After making just two runs and had figures of 0-49 off nine overs in a defeat to Otago, he got off to a promising start in his second match.
