Authorities in North Carolina say they have arrested and charged a suspect in connection with the disappearance of 3-year-old Mariah Woods, a girl whom they believe is probably dead.

Co-workers of the child's father today set up "The Mariah Woods Fund" to help the family with upcoming expenses.

Earl Kimrey, 32, the boyfriend of the child's mother, was apprehended Friday, the Onslow County Sheriff's Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation announced early Saturday.

Kimrey is being held in the Onslow County Detention Center.

One of the brothers said their mother knew that Kimrey allegedly was sexually abusing Mariah, according to the documents, which say she "failed to protect juveniles from exposure to sexual abuse".

Mariah's mother reported her missing on the morning of Monday, Nov. 27.

"I'm very saddened to report to you that we have recovered what we believe are the remains of little Mariah Wood", Sheriff Hans J. Miller said.

"This whole community has been on pins and needles hoping we would find her alive, and Saturday when (the news) broke, it devastated a lot of us", said Tisha Christy, a neighbor.

CBS affiliate WRAL reported the arrest warrant issued for Kimrey said he obstructed justice by "removing Mariah Woods' body from the scene of her death and did hide Mariah Woods' death and body, knowing that Mariah Woods died from unnatural causes. The defendant acted with deceit and intent to fraud".

On top of that, it's since been revealed that Earl has a long criminal history that includes charges for larceny, assault, threats to government, and being drunk and disorderly.

Kimrey "secretly disposed of the dead child's body", the warrant said. McMichael told ABC11 his son attended pre-k with one of Mariah's brothers previous year and he saw her all the time before and after school.

More than 225 members of 14 local, state and federal agencies have conducted almost 100 interviews in the case and followed more than 140 leads.

Officials said 730 volunteers participated in a search for Mariah on Friday. Woods told WCTI-TV in New Bern last week.

On Friday, the Onslow County Sheriff's Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation detained Kimery, 32, in connection with Mariah's disappearance. "Nobody heard nothing? Four people in the house, two adults and two babies and somebody just comes, snatches the baby up and walks out?"
