This enables the 1,320 kg (2,910 lbs) rally auto to rocket from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 4.1 seconds. It is connected to a five-speed sequential racing transmission that sends power to permanent four-wheel drive system. The new rally GTI is based on the new sixth-generation Volkswagen Polo made its first public debut early this week at the official driving presentation of the Polo GTI in Mallorca, Spain on Monday evening.

The auto which brought Jean-Karl Vernay the 2017 TCR International Series title, the Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR, will get a face-lift for the 2018 season with a re-working of the front-end bringing the vehicle to a design more similar to the production model, in order to increase emphasis on the relevance of the cars' road-going counterpart. "The feedback from the test drivers was very positive", says Demaison.

The Polo GTI R5 is set to be run by Volkswagen Motorsports' customer base, with VW expecting it to be a strong performer based on the experience it has gained in building WRC cars for the likes of current world champ Sébastien Ogier.

"It is obviously beneficial to be able to call upon an experienced team of engineers and mechanics, who helped to develop the Polo that won the world championship".

As part of the transformation from street vehicle to rally auto, the Polo has been outfitted with an aggressive body kit includes a sportier front bumper, extended fender flares, and a large rear spoiler.

Initial testing took place on asphalt and gravel roads in France last month with further running planned for the United Kingdom during December. Customer deliveries, as well as the first race appearances, are expected for the second half of next year. Our team and the colleagues at Volkswagen Deisgn in Wolfsburg, Germany, deserve great credit for this. "As we have in the past, we are taking advantage of the close and excellent cooperation with the colleagues in the technical development department in Wolfsburg, as well as our ŠKODA colleagues, who have been offering their customers an R5 auto since 2015". Prices starting at 23.875 Euros.
