College Basketball Predictions: Florida State vs. Florida 12/4/17

Throw in a small lineup that doesn't force turnovers at a high clip and doesn't control the defensive glass, and Monday was the flawless storm for Florida State to pull the upset.

What it means: One week after choking away a massive lead against No. 1 Duke, Florida laid down for its hated rival at home. The Noles did come up with a tremendous game plan - and credit to them for doing so - but even in a loss Florida should have played way better than it did in this game.

The game was nine days after the FSU football team beat UF for the fourth time in a row, across the street at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

Facing No. 5 Florida on the road, the Seminoles dominated from the latter parts of the first half on in an 83-66 victory.

Defensively, the Gators had no answers to stop FSU junior swingman Terrence Mann, who led all scorers with a career-high 25 points. The Seminoles needed the tuneup before they are forced to contend with a Gators team that has been scoring almost at will with an average of nearly 100 points per game (99.5), tops in the nation entering Sunday, after hitting in triple-digits in four of their first six games.

He added: "We spent the last 24 hours talking about throwing the first punch, throwing the first punch, being the aggressor, being proactive against a team that's gotten the better of us the last few years".

"Tonight", Florida coach Mike White said, "was the epitome of soft".

Junior guard Jalen Hudson led the Gators with 16 points, with junior guard KeVaughn Allen adding 15 points.

Asked how to solve the rebounding problem, and whether abandoning the four-guard starting lineup is an option, White said: "I don't know what to say there". If we get (senior center) John Egbunu back healthy, we're not looking at that for a while.

"It's probably going to be a track meet", Cofer said. We played exceptionally well and Florida didn't play as well as they're capable. The Seminoles held the nation's top scoring team to just 36 percent shooting and just 6-for-25 from the behind the 3-point line. Egor Koulechov finished with 11 points for the Gators, but was just 4-for-13, thanks largely to a cold shooting second half. The Gators have proven especially proficient from beyond the arc as they ranked fifth in the country in 3-point percentage (46.0) through Saturday, but their offensive proficiency has had to make up for a defense that is giving up an average of 80.7 points per game.

Hudson put Florida up 34-33 before the Seminoles closed the half on an 8-0 run. We expected Mike White's team to not miss a beat when it hit the floor on Monday night. The Gators looked rusty coming off an eight-day layoff and played a sloppier game than usual. Florida cut FSU's lead to 48-44 on a Hudson dunk in transition, but couldn't get closer as FSU extended its lead to as many as 18 in the closing minutes.

Chris Galbreath led the Bearkats (5-4) with 24 points and 10 rebounds. They combined to start 9-1 in 2011.

Having limited Florida (5-2) to 36.7 percent shooting, Florida State took a 42-35 lead into the halftime break.
