And her store will be open from 8 5 p.m., on Small Business Saturday.

"It was a focus campaign to shop small".

Of course the stores we featured are just a few of the thousands of small businesses here in northwest Ohio.

Saturday's mild, sunny weather is believed to have been a factor in why so many people were out strolling for the best deals.

"We do struggle, and it's hard to compete online", said Chris Smith, co-owner of Tailwagerz Pet Supply in north Jackson.

"It's important to support local businesses to keep the area thriving and to keep people coming in." says Nichole Foxhoven.

"Just trying to get people aware of the day, what it means, and to just come out and give our community that extra support today", Jennifer Andreas with the Cedarburg Chamber of Commerce said. "Now that we're here, we've been able to lease out six other spaces to entrepreneurs".

Morken also said "by shopping small you're creating the community you want because you're supporting the businesses that make it unique and make it what it is".

Hutchison said Twisted Wicker is having giveaways and drawings, plus coffee and snacks, for customers on Saturday.

Black Friday is all about shopping malls and big box stores. "It's our busiest day of the year and it really helps us survive and be sustainable the rest of the year", Morken said.

Chelsea Parker, owner of Mainstream Boutique in Waco, agrees.

The Sophia Lustig Shop has been a part of downtown Toledo for more than 80 years. Milneck said she feels lucky each time a customer enters her store. She says that Small Business Saturday helps her business thrive. "And I benefit from it as a business", Parker said. Like many other local business owners, she said the attractive glow of Portland's Christmas tree is also a symbol that holiday shopping, and Small Business Saturday, is here.

As many as 71 million people are expected to participate in what is known as Small Business Saturday, according to the National Retail Federation.
