Macy's Black Friday sale for 2017 is live online

The continued shift towards online spending for retailers has alleviated a lot of the overcrowding issues that stores encountered during previous Black Friday sales events. Another 23 percent said it is when they start their holiday shopping. Stores are trying to step up their game online and in person to attract customers who are moving back and forth from store to phone shopping.

Sales are ubiquitous on Black Friday, and this year will be no different.

Kohls and JCPenney were almost tied at the top the list, with average discounts of 66.32 percent off and 66.30 percent off respectively.

WalletHub found the average discount among major retailers to be 37 percent off, and the site urged consumers to "aim for this discount amount or higher to avoid Black Friday traps". However, shoppers are now choosing to research and make their purchases from the comfort of their home.
