As well as supporting roles for outgoing companion Pearl Mackie and Who stalwart Mark Gatiss, the special - titled "Twice Upon A Time" - will also be Peter Capaldi's final bow in the lead role.

Viewers elsewhere in the country might feel put out, but a BBC spokesman explained: "We work hard to serve audiences across the United Kingdom and have a long-term commitment to doing more in northern England". This year's episode will feature Peter Capaldi as the Doctor for the last time.

Fans of A League of Gentlemen will return to Royton Vasey and can apply to watch a screening of the first 20th anniversary special episode which will also be screened on the 15th December.

Starting in Hartlepool and finishing just before the big day in Bradford, the Christmas tour will take in eight locations across northern England to spread a little festive fun throughout the region.

And on the first two nights, at Hartlepool Town Hall and The Guild Hall in York, it will be followed by The League of Gentlemen.

While these special screenings will show Peter Capaldi's final journey, they won't include the final scene of the episode, expected to be Jodie Whittaker's much-anticipated first appearance as the new Doctor.

So as to avoid too many spoilers, the last few moments of the Doctor Who episode will be held back as a surprise for Christmas Day.

Mark Gatiss appears in both shows, guesting as the Captain in Doctor Who and alongside Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith in the comedy series they all wrote with Jeremy Dyson. Children will be able to see it in Newcastle and Hull.
