Delhi's Dyal Singh College to be renamed as Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya

"Then we had to give it a new and inspiring name, we decided it should be "Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya", Sinha further said.

In a new turn of events, that may or may not be well perceived, the Governing Body of the Dyal Singh College (Evening) made a decision to rename the college as Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya; after it is converted into a morning college. The reason for renaming the college is that the Dyal Singh (Morning) College already exists. He said, 'Notification was issued that Executive Council approved Dyal Singh evening college becoming a full-fledged day college. While, right wing student organization Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad said that nobody should have any problem in renaming of the college as it is renamed after the India's national song. The governing body has to chose to rename its evening college as ‘Vande Mataram Mahavidyalaya’.

' The name inspired millions during freedom struggle.

The decision to merge evening college with morning college was also condemned by students and teachers from the original morning session citing that the infrastructure of the college will not be able to support operations of both the sessions simultaneously.

Dismissing the opposition, Sinha said only a handful of people were opposed to the move. "After conversion, resources will have to be shared between the two colleges".

Dyal Singh (Evening) College was given a nod by the Delhi University (DU) Executive Council (EC) to be converted into a morning college in July, leading to protests by the faculty of the morning college.
