Police say a Rochester mother is now facing a murder charge after they say she admitted to drowning her 10-day-old child in a bathtub.

WHEC reported that another adult inside the home found the baby unresponsive in the bathtub and called 911.

Markiya Mitchell was arrested and charged in connection with the death of her son Jeremiah Mitchell, Rochester Police Chief Michael Ciminelli said.

Officials say the child, named Jeremiah, was taken to Rochester General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to the felony complaint, Mitchell filled the tub with 8 to 10 inches of bath water and left him submerged for 1 to 2 hours. When she was arraigned on Tuesday morning, she pleaded not guilty. Nevertheless it is now thought that individual is the child's father who Mitchell had been fighting with.

Police revealed that Mitchell has a criminal record, but they would not give details on her criminal history. Authorities also declined discussing Mitchell's mental state.

Police have charged 25 year old Markiya Mitchell with second degree murder. She had just regained custody of the child from CPS. Mitchell allegedly beat her 7-year-old child with a hammer.

Additional charges are pending in the case and Mitchell is scheduled to return to City Court Friday morning for a preliminary hearing. The 7-year-old child is now being taken care of by a family member, according to police. Neighbors say police came, but no arrests.
