Actress and singer Zendaya is set to star in the upcoming film A WHITE LIE (formerly titled THE GILDED YEARS). Hemmings is known as the first Black women to graduate from Vassar College in 1897-a time when African Americans weren't allowed to attend the school. It wasn't until shortly before her graduation, according to a 2002 story in Vassar, the college's alumni magazine, that her (white) roommate, (in the book, her name is Louise "Lottie" Taylor), expressed some suspicion to her family; her father hired a private investigator, who tracked down Hemmings's parents and exposed Hemmings's race.

For almost four years, Hemmings hid her true identity and was treated as an elite white woman at the school of her dreams until her roommate grew suspicious of her race, according to Vassar's alumnae publication.

Zendaya will also produce the film, alongside Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter.

The psychological thriller's script will be penned by Monica Beletsky.

The 21-year-old star launched her acting career by landing the role of Rocky Blue in Disney Channel sitcom Shake It Up. Homecoming star is no stranger to crafting stories behind the scenes, as she produced two episodes of Disney's K.C. Undercover this year and co-produced 40 episodes since 2014.

She will also be co-starring in the musical The Greatest Showman in December alongside actors Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron. The actress will also reprise her former role in the Spiderman sequel opposite Tom Holland.
