Allen County Public Health supports antibiotic awareness

"I'd urge healthcare professionals and residents to make the pledge and become an antibiotic guardian, and for people to think twice about taking antibiotics unless they have specifically been prescribed them by their GP".

"Taking antibiotics when they are not needed accelerates emergence of antibiotic resistance, one of the biggest threats to global health".

The research comes on the back of Public Health England's (PHE) recent 'Keep Antibiotics Working' campaign, aimed at stopping a potential "post-antibiotic apocalypse" caused by too many diseases gaining resistance.

The irrational use of antibiotics in the animal, agriculture and human health sectors plays a major role in this emerging health crisis today.

- The WHO says the bulk of antimicrobials administered worldwide are for animals, with around 80 percent of total consumption of medically important antibiotics coming from the animal sector in some countries.

Staff and students are invited to drop off any unwanted antibiotics at the stands on each of the days, with the drugs disposed of by the HPRU in Healthcare Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance team.

In a statement, AHI noted that "studies and experience show that programs aimed only at reducing use in animals have not been effective at reducing resistance rates in humans".

The Animal Health Institute reiterated its position that antibiotics need to be used responsibly in food-animal production, not eliminated altogether.
