Indian officials, police, soldiers and volunteers have attempted to direct nine whales after they were stranded on a beach in Aceh province of western Indonesia, a police officer said on Monday.

In a desperate rescue attempt in Indonesia, half a pod of sperm whales have been saved after they beached off the Aceh coast.

"Rescue effort is now underway with, among others, BPSPL Padang", the Jakarta-based marine mammal conservation organization wrote.

About seven whales were released before sunrise as rescuers worked through midnight and treated a pair of injured whales, Whale Stranding Indonesia told The New York Times.

Three other whales died on the beach.

He added the rescuers fear the six whales returned to the sea might attempt to come back for the four dead animals, risking being beached again. "We also still do not know what caused the injuries some of the stranded whales sustained", he said.
