Gurmeet Ram Rahim getting special privileges in prison, alleges Rohtak jail inmate

Rohtak: Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the self-declared godman serving a 20-year sentence for rape, is not enjoying VIP treatment in jail, a Haryana Minister said today, rubbishing reports of special privileges, longer visiting hours and a laid-back lifestyle for the disgraced Dera Sacha Sauda chief.

Rahul Jain, who came out on bail on Friday, said other prisoners were not even allowed 20 minutes to meet with their families on days when Ram Rahim appears in court through video conferencing. He, however, said neither he nor any other inmate has ever seen Ram Rahim in jail and only heard about him from officials.

"Since he came, everyone is having a lot of problems". Our basic necessities like clothes and shoes also stopped coming in.

An inmate of the Rohtak jail who was recently released on bail, revealed the real story of what exactly happens inside the prison.

"A lot of restrictions were put after Ram Rahim was brought in. Since we have never seen him, he might or might not be working", he said.

Ram Rahim has been sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of over Rs 30 lakh for raping two woman at his sect headquarters in Sirsa. He is now lodged at the District Jail at Sunaria near Rohtak in Haryana. "I don't think he does any jail work", Rahul said.

The last reports on him suggested that due to security reasons, the jail authorities had changed his prisoner number. The case was registered by the CBI in December 2002 on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
