Do you knit or crochet? Newborns need tiny hats!

The American Heart Association is seeking volunteers to help knit or crochet red hats for babies born during the month of February.

During American Heart Month, the "Little Hats, Big Hearts" program aims to encourage parents to live heart-healthy lives and to raise awareness about congenital heart defects. Community Medical Hospital is participating in the project.

"Together, we are working to raise awareness, provide resources and inspire moms to take their family's heart health to heart while also raising awareness about Congenital Heart Defects", according to a statement on the AHA website.

"Little Hats, Big Hearts" started in February 2014 in Chicago, collecting 300 hats in the first year. While we love bows and buttons, they can come off the hats and be risky for the little ones.

Donated hats should be made with red cotton or acrylic yarns that are medium to heavy weight, as well as machine washable.

Since then, the cause has since expanded to more than 40 states and thousands of hats.
