AR jawans killed in Manipur explosion

Two Assam Rifles jawans were killed and six injured when a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded early this morning at Chandel Town in Manipur's Chandel district, police said.

Report reaching here said that the Assam Rifle troopers were on road patrol duty when the blast took place.

Rifleman Indra Singh was killed on the spot, while rifleman Sohalal succumbed to his injuries within hours.

According to the Newspaper, One of the injured later died in the Leimakhong military hospital where he had been taken in a helicopter along with the other wounded personnel.The proscribed outfit Revolutionary People's Front (RPF) said its armed wing People's Liberation Army (PLA) was responsible for the explosion.

Meanwhile, residents of Chandel district headquarters and Chandel Naga Peoples Organization (CNPO) have condemned the IED attack to the security force. Bhavananda Singh, Director General of Police Shri L.M. Khaute, Deputy Commissioner of Chandel District, Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) Major General Virendra Singh and other top paramilitary officials also laid wreaths to the mortal remains of the two Assam Rifles jawans namely, Sohan Lal and Inder Singh.

Villagers of Mahamani, Kanankhu Khurinkhu, SInadam and Daampi areas participated.

All shops and business establishment remain shut during the protest.

The body while terming the act as an act of cowards said that they consider it as a plot to disturb and disrupt the peace talk between GoI and NSCN-IM which is at the Threshold to its logical conclusion.
