Kane Williamson: India was a better team

"It was a fantastic series, some great cricket played and in good series".

With an eye on the three-match Twenty20 series between the sides, starting in Delhi on Thursday morning (NZT), it's no wonder Black Caps captain Kane Williamson hailed Latham's form since dropping down the order.

Not many sides have come to India in the last one and half year or so and managed to challenge in this fashion, not even the Australians.

Batting at No 5, Latham started with an unbeaten 103 from 102 balls in New Zealand's six-wicket win in Mumbai, chipped in with 38 in the six-wicket loss in Pune, and had New Zealand on track to chase down India's 337-6 before he was cruelly run out in the decider. New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson praised his boys for putting up an incredible performance in the series. "To perform the way, we did in the first game (in Mumbai) was our best performance of the tour so far; this one could have been the best but it was not to be on the day", Williamson said. "I think we put in some good performances, but you have got to be at your best when you play this Indian team, especially at home".

"They were able to restrict a lot of the time, and put a little bit of pressure on them despite the very good batting unit that India have". Particularly Tom Latham - from opening the batting to coming into the middle order, taking that role, adopting it like he has and batting so beautifully... Coming over here is tough but for us it was to stay in the game as deep as possible.

That coupled with his brilliant effort in the last over to defend 15 runs helped the team seal out a close victory and that bagged them the series win as well.

"The beauty of a series is as it goes on it's the same for both teams". But, New Zealand bowlers did well to bounce back in final 10 overs as India were cruising after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma hit centuries.

"The score India posted was really good, and the fact that we got really close was good. But again, they have quality seamers and it wasn't meant to be today", he added. I thought guys executed their roles really well.
