The Chicago Bulls' season got off to one of the strangest starts in National Basketball Association history when on Tuesday, two days before Chicago's season-opening game, forward Nikola Mirotic was sent to the hospital with facial fractures suffered after being punched by teammate Bobby Portis during practice. This has come to be expected given that the actions that took place between the two players.

Portis and Mirotic have not spoken since the clash. Paxson acknowledged fault on both sides while calling the incident "inexcusable".

I am not convinced Portis wasn't hit with a tranquilizer dart immediately before addressing the media.

Portis returned to practice on Friday after he apologized to his teammates in a meeting. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Portis was unhappy that Mirotic was not present for summer workouts and that Portis' offseason efforts did not result in a starting job.

"It was good to have him back in here", Hoiberg said of Portis. "I want to publicly apologize to Niko (Mirotic)".

Portis, Chicago's first-round pick in 2015, said he has texted and called Mirotic, who, according to Portis, has not responded.

"I feel like I let my fans, the Bulls organisation and most importantly my team-mates down".

"He's still sore", Hoiberg said.

"I can't change the past, but at the same time, we're just competing", he said. "I'm just trying to fix my relationship with everybody".
