Lineker was watching the Champions League games as part of his role as presenter with BT Sport when he tweeted a less than flattering opinion of Benzema, who he called "decent, not great" as a centre-forward.

Benzema is in his ninth season at Real and his two goals in eight appearances across all competitions so far this term mean he has now scored 183 times in 373 total outings for the reigning Spanish and European champions. What pleases me is good football.

"It seems that a No 9 here is expected to score 50 or 60 goals but Karim is going to score 25 to 30 and will create another 30 or 40, which for me is the most important thing".

"So I get annoyed when people talk about my players, although we can not avoid it". For me he is the best by some distance'.

"For me, a striker doesn't only need to score goals".

Real Madrid fans and Spanish media were quick to defend one of their own, as was Los Blancos boss.

"In December we will challenge for another trophy [the Fifa Club World Cup] and we're still challenging in the league, in the Copa del Rey and in Europe".

"Karim Benzema is very happy at Real Madrid", he told Sky Sports.

Just like Zidane, Eibar's Basque manager holds Benzema in high esteem.

Many were quick to point out that Benzema is in the team, and has been for years, because of his link-up play and ability to occupy defenders and bring the wide-men into play, but Lineker still wasn't having it.

"They play well when he's in the side".
