The MP for Norwich South made the remarks at a Momentum event on the fringe of the Labour Party conference in Brighton last month.

I apologise unreservedly for the language I used at an event in Brighton last month.

One of the organisers of the event, Novara Media's Aaron Bastani, posted a higher quality video of the incident and defended Lewis, saying the "on your knees bitch" comment had been aimed at a man rather than a woman. It was offensive and unacceptable'. Fellow Labour politician Stella Creasy tweeted: "It's not OK. Even if meant as joke, reinforces menace that men have the physical power to force compliance".

Harriet Harman, former acting Labour leader and the longest-serving female MP in Parliament, said she was "dismayed" by Lewis' behaviour, which she branded "inexplicable and inexcusable". "But my God, you really understand why public thinks political class has lost it".

I was on stage for this.

On Friday a new website was set up called "LabourToo" which encouraged women within the Labour Party to anonymously share their experiences of sexual abuse inside the party.

It sparked widespread condemnation, with a party spokeswoman saying: "The Labour Party condemn the language used by Clive Lewis".

Justine Greening, minister for women and equalities, has written to Mr Corbyn to demand he personally condemn Mr Lewis's actions and take action to tackle misogyny on the left.

Labour spokesperson says Lewis's comments "fall far short of the standard expected of Labour MPs".
