Lotus reveals limited-run Elise Cup 260

Based largely on the Elise Race 250 race auto, the Elise Cup 260 will be limited to just 30 examples worldwide, with each priced at around AED290,000.

With 250bhp on tap from the 1.8-litre four-cylinder supercharged engine and a kerbweight of 902kg, the Elise Cup 260 can accelerate from 0-62mph in 4.2sec, on to a top speed of 151mph. The only problem, here in the States, most of Lotus' lineup isn't legal, including the company's newest addition, the Elise Cup 260. That's a slight power advantage over the 250 Cup, but what's most impressive about the 260 Cup is the amount of downforce it generates.

All of the lightweight performance options from the Cup 250 are standard equipment on the Cup 260. Not cheap, but few if any cars provide the pure, unadulterated driving experience of a Lotus.

Only 30 examples of the Elise Cup 260 will be produced and since the Elise doesn't meet current US road standards, none will arrive on our shores for quite some time. All these enhancements enabled the Elise Cup 260 to set a lap time of one minute and 32 seconds at the Hethel track, which was 2.5 seconds faster than the Elise Cup 250. With a dry weight of 862 kg, the Elise Cup 260 is 15 kg lighter than the Elise Cup 250. It also features a laurel wreath decal on the left buttress, and the Union Jack on both rear wing end plates.

Remodelling of bodywork has brought downforce gains of 44% over the Cup 250. The vehicle comes standard with Alcantara upholstery, but if it were our money we'd spring for either the yellow or red Tartan trim pack. Power is sent to the road via a six-speed manual gearbox.

Lotusrides the special edition train almost as often as Jeep.

"Our philosophy for producing extraordinary vehicles is world famous, but the new Elise Cup 260 goes beyond what many believed possible from our smallest auto", said Jean-Marc Gales, Lotus' CEO. "With just 30 examples to be built, there's no doubt that the Elise Cup 260 is a future classic".

Pricing has only been announced for Europe, but the United Kingdom base price converts to roughly $77,800.

Lotus hasn't released pricing, but given that other special edition Lotus' held a hefty premium, it's safe to assume that this little Elise will too.
