The US singer Tom Petty has died in hospital after suffering a heart attack.

Tom Petty's family paid their respects to the rocker in an intimate service on Monday.

AnnaKim Violette, one of Petty's two daughters from his first marriage to Jane Benyo, posted a series of photos from the service, captioned with lyrics from his songs.

Petty died of cardiac arrest on October 2 at the age of 66. This is also where Beatles band member George Harrison's funeral took place in 2001.

A spokesperson for Petty confirmed the details of the funeral and said it was followed by a celebration of life with friends and colleagues. Petty posted a photo of a white T-shirt with an illustrated Tom Petty on it along with the Latin phrase "Nil Desperandum", coming from Horace's Odes and roughly translating to "no need to despair".

An autopsy was conducted in early October, Los Angeles County coroner spokesman Ed Winter told the Associated Press.

It's unclear where Petty will be laid to rest, but his death certificate listed Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park in Los Angeles as the funeral establishment where officials will handle his remains.

Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, when they were described by organisers as "the quintessential American individualists", capturing the voice of the American everyman.
