Officials added that the site has been secured, but crews are not yet able to safely enter the facility. Residents who live in the evacuated area are asked to check in. These streets were closed because of the leak: 9th Street and 11th Street from the highway to 6th Avenue and 6th Avenue from 9th to 11th Streets.

Ruiter said the call came to his department as a medical call shortly before noon. "I've never seen winds like this in Fernie before", she said.

The Fernie Memorial Arena is home to the Junior B Fernie Ghostriders and is also listed as available for public skates and ice rentals.

The City of Fernie has just reported that homes in the area are being evacuated and Emergency Social Services are being set-up at the Senior Citizens Drop-In Centre (562 3rd Avenue).

An ammonia at the Fernie Memorial Arena has resulted in multiple deaths in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Trish Knight Chernecki from WorkSafe BC wrote in an e-mail that the incident was a "tragic loss of life". "We are one of the user groups", she said.
