Tension gripped Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara town on Tuesday after the army rescued a soldier, whom people accused of being involved in a braid chopping incident.

Islamia College's students clashed with the police who used teargas shells to disperse the stone-pelting students protesting the government's inability to prevent these incidents.

A SHO and two policemen were injured along with a youth who has been hospitalised, they said.

Some local boys started beating the armyman over allegations that he was involved in braid chopping, the cop said, adding that he was rescued by other soldiers. "The mob also pelted stones on the army camp".

"We have launched investigations", he said.

Over 100 braid chopping incidents have been reported from the Valley so far. A majority of such incidents were reported from densely populated urban areas and rural zones, and the victims were mostly young girls or middle-aged women.

ISLAMABAD:The Hurriyat forum led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressing serious concern over the unabated incidents of braid chopping coupled with theft of gold jewelry and cash has said that the puppet regime has failed to nab culprits and stop the incidents.

Reports said that soon after the woman's braid was chopped off, scores of people took to streets and staged massive protests.

The separatist leaders, Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik, who spearheaded over five-month-long unrest in the Valley after Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani's killing a year ago, have blamed security forces and government for braid-chopping incidents.

This "Braid-chopping" goes beyond Kashmir.
