Variety reports Sony is in negotiations to acquire the film rights and will be working with producer Gail Katz (Air Force One, The Perfect Storm) on the project. And that inspired another question: are there any board games that would make for great movies? It is also available to play on gaming and mobile platforms.

The popular Settlers of Catan board game is about to takeover the big screen.

It's unclear what the plans are to convert The Settlers of Catan into a film script. There has been no confirmation that the studio has acquired the rights to this movie yet, but it seems they are aggressively pursuing it. Blaise Hemingway, whose auspicious credits include the upcoming Ugly Dolls movie and the "Untitled Playmobil Movie", has been hired to write the screenplay. Sony Picture is hoping to use Catan to launch a possible franchise, and is looking to fast-track the project.

"We're excited to be working with Sony to bring the iconic world of Catan to life", Katz said in a statement. "As huge fans of the game, we're struck by the endless possibilities of stories that it could inspire". The popular board game has sold over 25 million copies in 28 languages worldwide, bringing tabletop gaming back into game nights around the world.

"Settlers of Catan" is undoubtedly one of the most coveted games since it was released in 1995. While not as universal as other, less good board games (Monopoly stinks, y'all), a lot of people all over the world are familiar with this game. The Settlers of Catan also boasts millions of rabid players, an active online community, and you can also play the game online here. The game revolves around a group of settlers who are attempting to establish colonies on the island of Catan.
