The video, taken from a San Diego Comic Con panel in 2011, shows Momoa joking that he loved his role as Khal Drogo on the HBO series because he got to "rape handsome women".

An video of Game of Thrones' Jason Momoa making a joke about loving his role on the show because it allowed him to "rape attractive women" has gone viral.

Momoa then jokes: "And rape lovely women and have them fall in love with me, you know what I mean?"

Game of Thrones has been constantly criticised for its portrayal of rape throughout the series. Momoa played Khal Drogo in the show, a role that included several rape scenes with co-star Emilia Clarke (who was also on the panel).

The clip surfaced in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, where the dishonored Hollywood powerhouse has been accused by almost 30 women of sexual misconduct.

Jason Momoa has found himself in hot water for inappropriate comments he made during a 2011 Comic-Con panel.

"As far as sci-fi and fantasy, I love that genre because there are so many things you can do" says Mamoa.

Others defended the clip, saying it was old and it was referring to his character in the show.

Welp, this has been a week, and it's safe to assume that you've seen the news over the past few days detailing the ongoing fallout from The New York Time's lengthy report on (former) producer Harvey Weinstein.

We're pleased to see that he has owned up for his comments and offered an apology, but the comment shouldn't have been made in the first place. I'm not a rapist!

He also plays Aquaman in the film Justice League, set to be released next month.
