The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the bypoll in Bhandup (West) ward 116 onThursday, with 11,229 votes. Its candidate Jagruti Patil won the seat after beating Shiv Sena nominee Minakshi Patil by 4,792 votes. BJP might look at playing the dominant role in the BMC if the streak of success endures; after Wednesday's bypoll, the BJP has 82 corporators in a house of 225. The bypoll was held as the seat had become vacant following the death of Congress corporator Pramila Patil on April 25. Congress candidate Pramila Singh came a distant third. It also continues to have support of four other independent corporators. Polling for the Bhandup ward no 116 by-election was held on Wednesday. The Shiv Sena emerged the single largest party winning 84 wards in the February elections, which produced an inconclusive result, with no party anywhere close to the 114 required to control the municipality. BJP MP Kirit Somaiya said on Thursday that the Shiv Sena should shed its arrogance.

The BJP and the Shiv Sena, who secured 82 and 84 seats respectively in the BMC elections in the month of February, are both trying to raise their tally. Death of the corporator Shailaja Girkar had brought down the BJP's tally in the BMC last month, which was restored with their victory in today's by poll.

Mumbai: Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar on Thursday said the party's victory in the BMC bypoll was an endorsement by voters of development agenda being pursued by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. Her daughter-in-law, Jagruti, joined the BJP, and contested elections.
