Amazon on Thursday said the seasonal jobs will be spread out over more than 75 fulfillment centers countrywide to help pick, pack and ship holiday orders.

Earlier this fall Walmart, the nation's largest employer, said it would fill its need for more seasonal help by giving additional hours to its existing part-time workers, rather than bringing on additional employees.

Online retail giant Amazon is adding 120,000 temporary jobs to its warehouse workforce for the holidays, which will almost double its staff.

Macy's Inc. plans to increase seasonal hires at its warehouses by 20% to 18,000, although overall seasonal hiring at the retailer is down slightly.

Amazon hired the same number of seasonal workers a year ago, and 100,000 workers for the 2015 holiday season.

Nationwide, Target plans to hire around 100,000 employees, in addition to 4,500 team members that will work at distribution centers and fulfillment facilities during the holiday season.

Amazon said it employs more than 125,000 full-time workers at more than 75 fulfillment warehouses across the US - a number likely to be updated when the company reports third-quarter earnings in the coming weeks.
