The spokesman said the fighter jet was among four that participated in the parade in Madrid.

A jet fighter belonging to the Spanish military crashed on Thursday after an air display to mark the country's national day.

The jet had been taking part in a military parade to commemorate Spain's national holiday and crashed on its return, a defence ministry spokesman said.

The crash reportedly took place near a public park, just south of Albacete called La Pulgosa.

Several Spanish newspapers have quoted military sources, saying that the pilot had not managed to eject from the cockpit before it crashed.

The fate of the pilot and the cause of the crash were not immediately known and it was not clear if there were any other casualties.
