"Ongoing incident" at high-security Long Lartin prison near Evesham

The category means the prison hosts the most risky types of criminal, such as those convicted of murder, rape or terrorism offences.

The Ministry of Justice has confirmed the "incident" as prisoners have reportedly taken over an entire wing of HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire.

The BBC claims prisoners have attacked staff with pool balls and riot police have been sent in.

A Prison Service spokesman said: 'We are now managing an ongoing incident at HMP Long Lartin.

Long Lartin is one of the highest-security facilities in England and Wales.

Around 80 inmates are believed to be rioting in the prison's E Wing, with staff forced to flee the area.

Today's chaos comes after a series of other prison riots in the UK.

The Category A men's prison now has a capacity of 622 inmates, which includes people being held on remand.

Severe budget cuts have left prisons facing a serious shortage of trained prison officers.
