Jets stay levelheaded about showdown with Patriots

The preseason expectation was that the Patriots could be facing an 0-5 Jets team Sunday.

Are they finally slipping?

"It's good that we're 3-2", Forte said Thursday. Just as they did in 2013, the Jets can beat the Patriots and announce themselves as contenders.

The Jets' defense has had a few halting moments this season, and it will be hard for this unit to hold up under the pressure it will feel against Tom Brady. They are No. 1 in total offense and passing offense, and No. 3 in scoring offense.

Tom Brady leads all quarterbacks in passing yards.

"We don't discuss that", linebacker Darron Lee said. "We know we can't play like this and win the division and achieve our other goals".

Those same experts also talked about the possibility - or even likelihood - of the Jets going 0-16. None of those guys are anywhere near Brady's class.

If the Jets want people to start taking them seriously this year, they can start Sunday.

"It's a challenge because he's seen everything", Jets coach Todd Bowles said. "There's nothing you can do that's going to surprise him". [We] just have to be sound and play football - hopefully, make some plays on the back end. There is still a lot of football left to be played.

After all, this was just months ahead of a season destined to be filled with losses - and more importantly, a high draft pick that could be exchanged for a franchise-altering quarterback in 2018. They can't sack you if you're handing the ball off.

Bill Belichick and Matt Patricia were hoping that end Trey Flowers would be the breakout star of the defense after recording 7 sacks a year ago, and 2 1/2 in the postseason. By the Jets' count, they have 32 quarterback hurries this season.

Harris was sent packing, but he took a two-year pact from the reigning Super Bowl champion Patriots.

The Patriots did get lucky, as Nick Folk missed three kicks.

"Coaches had some good game plans", Davis told Newsday about getting to the quarterback. He's still back there and throwing it.

He added: "Williams is one of the best defensive lineman we see all year".

The 29-year-old has emerged as the Patriots' top target, which is pretty remarkable considering that Hogan went to Penn State to play Lacrosse and didn't play college football until his final year of eligibility at Monmouth.

Brady does not have Julian Edelman, who tore his ACL in training camp, this season.

In addition to Brady, Rob Gronkowski (thigh) and cornerback Eric Rowe (groin) also did not participate in Wednesday's practice, along with tackle Nate Solder (non-injury related).

"We have to do a better job protecting him", running back James White said, per Mike Reiss of ESPN.com. He has 54 catches against the Jets, his most vs. any opponent, for 655 yards and six TDs in 11 games. "It hasn't been a letdown for them. Basically things that quarterbacks don't like, they like ... just little knicky-knack stuff just to pick his brain".
