Employees injured in attempted prison break in Pasquotank Co

An attempted prison escape in Elizabeth City resulted in several injured employees, the N.C. Department of Public Safety said in a tweet Thursday. The sewing plant is a prison enterprise at Pasquotank Correctional Institute. "All we know is there were multiple people injured", said the official, who declined to provide her name because she did not have permission to speak to the media.

Three nearby schools have been placed on lockdown.

Northside Elementary, Elizabeth City Middle School and Pasquotank County High School were all placed on lockdown. They also did not want students to be home alone during this incident.

Department of Public Safety spokesperson Jerry Higgins says that no inmates were able to escape and the situation is under control.

Elizabeth City fire crews and EMS have responded to the prison.
