The seasoned Argentine recovered to win 3-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 in one hour, 55 minutes against the 20-year-old Zverev and will next play either Viktor Troicki or John Isner.

Zverev took the first set 6-3 but dropped the following two as he capitulated en route to a defeat which sees him miss out on a quarter-final spot.

Del Potro, who lost his serve for the only time in the match in the second game, won nine of his 15 service games at love.

Looking at Thursday's schedule, action begins at 5am, and Isner's match against Troicki (not before 10:30am United Kingdom time) certainly seems the most likely to be serve-orientated, with my model establishing that the likelihood of no breaks in the first set is just below 40% - considerably higher than any other match on the card. "This was a positive for me looking to the future".

Zverev whacked his racket on the court.

Alexander Zverev faces Juan Martin del Potro in Round of 16.

"I don't understand how I can lose a match where I get broken one time in three sets and not managed to get any chances on his serve", said Zverev, the world number four tipped to one day top the rankings. "He's still very young and has to keep learning".

Earlier, sixth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria got past Sam Querrey of the US 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the round of 16.
