CIS Council of Heads of State meeting kicks off in Sochi

The session is chaired by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A joint photo of the Azerbaijani and Russian presidents was taken, and afterwards the meeting began. Top on the agenda are the draft statement of the CIS heads of state on supporting families and traditional family values and the draft convention of the Commonwealth of Independent States on peaceful uses of outer space.

President Almazbek Atambayev could not attend the summit in the Russian Black Sea resort due to intelligence obtained by the republic's law enforcement agencies about mass riots plotted in Kyrgyzstan.

President Vladimir Putin underlined the existence of all opportunities for implementing new large-scale projects based on mutual interests and expressed his confidence that the meeting will give impetus to the expansion of exchange of experience in the field of culture, education, science and tourism.

The CIS leaders will be able to delegate their powers to the heads of government, ministers of foreign affairs and the CIS Economic Council, defense ministers, commanders of the border troops.

Putin emphasized that the meeting will traditionally focus on the development of ties in the spheres of economy, trade and investments.

Sergey Lebedev - Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee, Executive Secretary, will hold a press conference reporting on the results of the discussions of the heads of state, as well as the documents signed during the extended and narrow format sessions.
