The 29-year-old Barcelona forward would come at a large cost - his buy-out clause is £268.7m - but Aguero thinks if Messi was keen to make the move, finances would not be an issue.

And despite Barcelona claiming an agreement has been struck, Messi is yet to put pen-to-paper on the deal.

"The money isn't a problem here", Aguero told TyC Sport.

"But I think Messi, like (Cristiano) Ronaldo, are players who are symbols of their clubs and its hard for them to leave".

The attacker has been in sublime form this season so far, scoring 14 goals in 11 games for the Spanish giants, while he also fired a hat-trick to send Argentina to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in the final qualifying match.

However, Aguero hit back at his critics for suggesting he should not have been in Amsterdam in his days off from the club.

Aguero sustained a broken rib when a taxi he was passenger in crashed on its way to Amsterdam airport last month. He added: "When a player has a free day at Manchester City, most of the players go to London, others to Italy, some to Spain".

"I left for nearly two days and went back to the airport and then got into that accident".

Sergio Aguero has revealed he does not know if he will feature in Manchester City's clash with Stoke City on Saturday, but he has returned to full training after breaking his ribs in a auto crash.

"Today I have trained normally, but not yet with the group".
