Dr. Jason Kolowski, a forensic scientist leading the testing and interpretation of the results, told OxygenMonday that tests on the fragments came back negative. Oxygen recently wrapped up its series, "The Disappearance of Natalee Holloway".

The DNA bone sample was ruled out as Holloway after it failed to match to her mother, Kolowski said.

"We don't know how old that person is", he continued.

The disappearance of Natalee Holloway remains an unsettling mystery after it was revealed that the skeletal remains found in Aruba do not belong to the Alabama teen.

"They took their eyes off the last people that were known to be with Natalee", her father, Dave Holloway, told Nancy Grace on "Nightline" in August.

The identity of the person whose DNA was tested remains unknown, Kolowski said.

The statements by the pathologist conflicted with an assertion by the prosecutor's office in Aruba that no human remains were located at a site where Holloway and his private investigator, T.J. Ward, directed authorities in early 2017.

The teen's dad believed the discovery of the bone fragments was the most credible lead he'd chased since his daughter's disappearance in 2005. That friend, John Ludwick, claimed that van der Sloot had paid him $1,500 to recover Natalee's remains and bring them to a crematorium.

Human bone fragments found in Aruba that were suspected to be those of Natalee Holloway do not belong to the dead American teenager.

Van der Sloot, a Dutch national, has always been considered a suspect in the case. The primary suspect is still Joran van der Sloot, a Dutch man who remains behind bars in Peru for the murder of a different young woman.

Van der Sloot has always been the prime suspect but has never been charged in Natalee's disappearance due to a lack of evidence.

Van der Sloot is now in a Peruvian prison serving a 28-year sentence for killing business student Stephany Flores just five years after Natalee Holloway vanished.
