Instagram, the photo sharing giant owned by Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB), just took a big step toward growing the e-commerce reach of its platform.

BigCommerce has today confirmed that, in partnership with Instagram, it will be enabling support for sales through the social media platform.

"Instagram has played a major role in helping us build a brand, and we love how the new shopping features allow us to easily showcase our products in a way that feels authentic to the community we've built", said Ken Natori, President for The Natori Company.

In addition to making shoppable posts, BigCommerce merchants can use the shopping feature to gain insights, such as how many people interacted with product details or clicked "shop now" to visit the online store. Instagram's shopping feature allows tagging of products that are available for sale, and then letting users purchase them directly within the app. Shopify's integration of Instagram's shopping experience simplifies the process of getting this set up, especially for Shopify users already selling goods via the commerce provider.

According to the publication, BigCommerce serves about 50 thousand small businesses, 2 thousand mid-sized companies and 25 large companies. Year-to-date, FB has gained 47.50%, versus a 14.57% rise in the benchmark S&P 500 index during the same period.
