Meanwhile, there were recalls for middle-order batsmen James Vince and Gary Ballance despite the pair's struggles during their previous Test stints.

"I've batted everywhere in the last few years, so wherever I bat, I'd be happy".

The Durham all-rounder was dropped for Wednesday's fourth one-day worldwide against West Indies at The Oval after being arrested early on Monday in Bristol following England's win in the third ODI in the southwest city on Sunday.

Stokes was included in England's despite his recent arrest on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm.

The uncapped trio of Craig Overton, Ben Foakes and Mason Crane are also featuring in the Ashes squad.

Wood is expected to be named in the Lions squad, which is also heading for Australia, so could still be in with a shout if he proves his fitness.

"Surrey's Ben Foakes deserves his selection for the first time at this level".

"He has the ability to contribute with the bat, with him scoring over 680 runs in the Championship this summer at an average of 45.33".

"His understanding of the England set-up will help him settle into the environment quickly and hit the ground running when we arrive in Perth next month".

"Craig Overton, who, like Foakes, has come through the International Pathway, has been involved in the England set-up this summer with the Lions and the T20 squad".

In a statement, the England and Wales Cricket Board says Bond will be on hand for the series opener in Brisbane from November 23, followed by the day-night Test in Adelaide.

He is now head coach of the New Zealand A team on their tour of India.

Foakes made his debut for England Under-19s in January 2011, playing two Youth Test matches against Sri Lanka Under-19s during England's tour to Sri Lanka.
