Guardiola saw his side progress to the fourth round of the League Cup after beating West Bromwich Albion 2-1 on Wednesday night (20 September), but lamented the tie had been energy-sapping for his team.

"I think he is just talking in terms of his group of players, his club and their priorities, and I can see why he said it, but for the rest of us, it is an opportunity to win a trophy, and that is very important".

Manchester City and Manchester United are now looking down at the rest of the league, both on 13 points and still unbeaten.

"Business is business, but we have a lot of games", Guardiola said at a press conference on Friday ahead of the Palace match.

"But he showed his personality because it's not easy for him to play in these type of games but he did it well and that's why we're happy for him to come back".

"For the managers it's a lot of wasted energy, but we knew that before so no complaints". "Business is business. We have a lot of games".

They have brought in players that enjoyed success at their previous clubs - Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy won the French title with Monaco last season; goalkeeper Ederson Moraes won the Portuguese title with Benfica - but Mourinho's assertion is that a team's first success is a way to unite them and start off a winning mentality.

"Then three days later, it's Crystal Palace, three days later, Shakhtar Donetsk, three or four days later, Stamford Bridge".

Guendogan, who was making his first start for City after damaging knee ligaments in December, received treatment on the pitch after being clattered by West Brom midfielder Claudio Yacob and could not continue.

Frank de Boer paid the price for overseeing defeats in the opening four league games and successor Roy Hodgson failed to break that run in his first game in charge against Southampton last weekend.

He said: "It is the Premier League".

With Manchester United and Chelsea next up, things could get significantly worse for Hodgson's side before they get better but the new manager believes there are positive signs, particularly with Sakho back in contention.

Yet Manchester United manager Mourinho suggested on Wednesday that English clubs in the Champions League and Europa League should be allowed to opt out of the tournament. We fight like a normal team.
