But the six women managed to laugh off the common blunder after all choosing the $160 "Forever New" navy and white pencil dress on Saturday.

Fortunately the hilarious turn of events was taken in good spirits by all involved, and has provoked much amusement online after one of the guests posted an image on Facebook.

"No we are NOT the bridesmaids just the guests - think I deserve a gift voucher for all this advertisement", she joked.

Two days after posting the picture, Ms Speranza's post received close to 32,000 likes and more than 7,000 comments.

"Hahaha! This is priceless".

Mirroring the 1993 Alan Ball play, Five Women Wearing The Same Dress, after some initially confusion the six women - whose group photos have prompted amused horror from women around the world - eventually bonded, before dancing the night away.

"It looks good on all of them too!" posted one admirer, as another said: "Hehehe I thought oh wow I love their bridesmaid dresses!"

One woman believed the best way to handle the situation was to "laugh it off".

It's called the Debbie Lace pencil dress, and costs $159.99 (£95).

The dress is described on Forever New's website as "perfectly tailored to flatter and accentuate your figure" and it's clearly a popular choice.

Meanwhile, women have opened up about the ugly side of being a bridesmaid.
