Early on Monday, some 8,000 South Korean police had been deployed to the area to maintain order and to pave the way for the arrival of 10 United States military vehicles carrying equipment for the four remaining THAAD launchers.

China is unhappy about the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, because it believes the system's radar could look deep into its territory.

In response to the sixth nuclear test on September 3, the United States and its allies are trying to have the U.N. Security Council endorse a new resolution toughening sanctions on North Korea. "It doesn't seem much time is left before North Korea achieves its complete nuclear armament", CNN quoted the Prime Minister as saying at a meeting of defence officials here.

China and Russian Federation, two of the five veto-wielding permanent members of the council, hold the key to whether North Korea will face stricter sanctions.

North Korea's most influential newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, in its front page praised the country for becoming an "invincible nuclear power" after having succeeded in possessing an atomic bomb, a hydrogen bomb and even an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Despite the clashes, the launchers moved past the village and entered the deployment site.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in says more launchers were added to a contentious high-tech missile defense system because his country faces an unprecedented security threat from North Korea.

"All the parties will have enough common sense to understand their responsibility to the people of the region, so we will succeed in resolving the issue through diplomatic means", Putin said, according to TASS.

The statement says both leaders stressed that the global community has condemned North Korea's "provocations".

"The battery will be operational as soon as the USA finishes its internal procedures", Ministry spokesperson Moon Sang-gyun said at a press conference, reported Yonhap news agency. South Korea's Defense Ministry couldn't immediately confirm when the four launchers added on Thursday will be operationally capable. Abe is due to meet Putin separately later today.

Just days before its sixth nuclear test, North Korea launched an intermediate-range ballistic missile that crossed Japan before landing in the northern Pacific Ocean. A THAAD battery is known to require at least six rocket launchers, also involving a fire control and communications unit.

Still, security experts say the United States will not allow a nuclear-armed South Korea, as an atomic arms race would only further complicate the security situation in north-east Asia.

Seonju residents and activists have raised worries over rumoured health hazards linked to the system's powerful radar and the possibility the town will become a target of North Korean attacks.

Moon temporarily halted the THAAD installation for environmental reviews to ease residents' concerns.
