Are you as excited as we are upon hearing a brand new Star Trek theme? There's so many great ones-if we're counting anime, I'm partial to the likes of Lupin III's theme, or Gundam Wing, but for TV at large there's everything fromStar Trek: Voyager's brazen brass section or the timeless, cosmic weirdness of Doctor Who's ever-fluctuating tiles. And a lot of expectations are riding on Star Trek: Discovery as the first Star Trek series to hit the small screen in 12 years.

The theme song for Star Trek: Discovery will sound vaguely familiar, and that's entirely intentional. Television themes as well have been dependent on a catchy jingle. So you never know from whom an iconic score will come from.

CBS has revealed a new video for the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery featuring composer Jeff Russo and a 60-piece orchestra that play the new theme song for the series, blending the fan-favorite musical cue with the new theme. The latest introduces the new main theme song. and luckily, there isn't a single Enterprise electric guitar in sight. But it's just not that catchy. The theme cheats a little by appealing to nostalgia in the beginning and definitely the end, but I like where it goes once it starts being its own thing and greatly appreciate that they went with slow and wondrous rather than propulsive and action-heavy, which is honestly how the show is looking so far.

Fans have already been waiting almost a decade for Star Trek to return to the small screen, its place of origin.

Star Trek: Discovery debuts on CBS and CBS All Access September 24.
