( TGT ) is gearing up for the upcoming holiday season by saying it plans to hire about 100,000 seasonal workers across the country.

The company had hired 7,500 workers to work at the centers past year as it required additional staffing for three new facilities.

Retailers make almost a third of their annual sales and generate almost 40 percent of their profits during the holiday selling season, which starts a day after Thanksgiving and continues into early January.

Target plans to hire 2,500 seasonal workers in Colorado, including 1,500 in the Denver metro area, the giant retailer announced Wednesday. This is a 42.9% increase year over year. The workers will stock shelves, help customers, pack and load products and fill online orders.

Target will also hire 4,500 team members at the company's distribution and fulfillment centers to replenish products to stores and fulfill digital sales throughout the season.

Last year, it hired 7,500 for its distribution centers because it had opened three new facilities. Target team members play such an important role in helping guests as they prepare to celebrate the holidays with their families.

Last week, Target said last week that it would slash prices on cereal, paper towels and thousands of other items.
