Newcastle United fans were left delighted with the performance of Jesus Gamez after Sunday's 1-0 win over Swansea at the Liberty Stadium.

The Portugal midfielder endured a difficult start to life in the Premier League, battling hard but often giving away possession before being substituted in the 69th minute.

The first real chance of the game went the way of the Toon, with Spanish forward Joselu's header forcing stopper Fabianski to palm it round the post in sublime fashion.

'The manager rang me this morning and told me to make sure the boys were on it. "We've not played well and we've lost the game. It is down to us to bring it every week".

Newcastle were fortunate on two occasions also.

A physical first half saw little from Newcastle in the final third, as they were content to sit back and wait for their opportunities. "Something is obviously not right on this in the details of how we defended and that's what we've got to get right", he said.

Moreno added: "We are very glad because we planned the game to try and win three points and we did it".

"Rafa stayed at home and it's what we wanted".

"He was talking with us (during the game)".

Newcastle, in contrast, executed their game-plan perfectly, aided throughout by Benítez's open telephone line to his backroom staff.

Lascelles and Ciaran Clark were superb at the heart of defence, with Mikel Merino and Isaac Hayden equally effective at the heart of midfield. Join the Newcastle Toons team! There was flashes of brilliance and once he gets back up to speed he should be a very useful player.

"He congratulated everybody, especially the players because they did a massive job".

Clement said: "He did some good things; he did some things that were not so good".

Newcastle had arranged to put on a helicopter to fly him to and from his Merseyside base, but Benitez was not well enough to make a game decided by skipper Jamaal Lascelles' 76th-minute header.

The goal hero said: "They mark zonal and I prefer to go against that".

An incredible goal-line clearance saved the team on defence, while his excellent header from a Matt Ritchie corner proved to be the victor. We need Rafa back as soon as possible. They are a good side, but we were the better team on the day.

Ayoze Perez has backed Newcastle to carry on surprising those who predicted their Premier League demise.
