The Spain global has become a crucial part of Conte's back three, and even got on the scoresheet in a 6-0 Champions League thrashing of Qarabag on Tuesday.

On the first match day of the Champions League group stage, a double from Michy well as goals from Pedro, Cesar Azpilicueta and debut goals from Davide Zappacosta and Tiemoue Bakayoko, ensured the Blues started well in their return to the competition. The fourth win in a row comes five days ahead of the visit of the Gunners in one of the defining top flight fixtures of any campaign.

He came on for half an hour on Tuesday with the points already in the bag. The ex-Lille playmaker played 12 minutes on his comeback against Leicester City on Saturday [9 September] yet Conte has hinted that he will have to settle for place on the Chelsea bench this weekend.

"I don't even think they'll go as far as Manchester United or, by a fag paper, Liverpool in this season's competition". "We are happy to see him on the field". The Champions League is a competition that a year ago wasn't there.

"I'm very proud to lead this team".

"Batshuayi to score, Zappacosta's first appearance here at Stamford Bridge - he played very well - and [Eden] Hazard is trying to find his best form". Because we risk injury. "And also to [Andreas] Christiansen".

"They must understand that I trust my players".

"First game in the Champions League I decide to pay with to start with rotation also to start the process to improve these players".

The Blues - making their return to European competition having failed to qualify last season - rested several first-team players for the visit of the Azerbaijani champions, but still won easily. He is very good with and without the ball.
